The Louise Archer Robotics Club participates in the FIRST Lego League competition every fall.  This challenges 5th and 6th grade students to focus on the given theme for the year to help inspire future scientists and engineers.  The eight week season leads to a regional tournament that is usually in the Ashburn or Reston area immediately prior to Thanksgiving. Students will work with the Lego Mindstorms NXT robot to complete missions on an 8' x4' playing field and present a research project at the tournament. Elements of teamwork are also 'judged'.

We have fielded three teams(of up to 10) in each of the last three years.  Parent volunteer roles are essential to our ability to offer this all-volunteer program. Time commitment is one all-team meeting per week (Fridays before school) and an additional meeting (approx. 2 hours per week) with the individual team *usually hosted by the coach, plus teacher workday 'jam sessions'.

Our teams have won Robotic Design awards and Judges awards.  We look forward to seeing your child participate in this fun and challenging season.

Fall 2010 update

Based on interest forms returned in the spring, and the coaches available, two teams of 5th and 6th graders are forming for the 2010 'Body Forward' FLL Challenge.
In addition, as a trial, a rookie team of 4th graders is also planning to participate.
There will be limited spaces for more participants unless additional volunteer coaches step up. The cost of the program this year is $78, and there may be additional team expenses such as snacks,  possible field trip, tournament presentation and trading materials, etc. The season begins Sept. 3rd officially, and concludes with a regional tournament in mid November.
